NationMaster - THE place for statistics, NationMaster is a massive central data source that allows you to graphically compare nations. Data sources include the CIA World Factbook, UN, and OECD.
Numeric Data for UN information (Yale) - recommended sources for statistics
Official Statistics on the Web (OFFSTATS) - designed by the University of Auckland Library, this search tool finds official statistic sources indexed in their database by country, region, or topic.
Statistics in LexisNexis Scholastic (requires login available from the library) - select Statistics on the left menu to use the Power Tables interface to find stats from current day to 20 years ago. Limit About this region to International. To improve results, read the Tips section.

Background Notes - from the U.S. Department of State; includes detailed foreign policy information from the U.S. perspective
CIA World Factbook - Demographic information and maps; good starting point for becoming familiar with the country you're representing
CIA World Leaders - Quick reference guide to world leaders and high-ranking members of government in nations around the world
Library of Congress Country Studies -
description and analysis of the historical setting and the social, economic, political, and national security systems and institutions of countries throughout the world. Bookmark only the table of contents for a country study, not individual sections.
Library of Congress Portals to the World - selected online resources about nations
Columbia International Affairs Online - Excellent site that has compilations of resolutions, working papers, policy briefs, and other relevant information. It does require a subscription, but you can sign up for a free trial.

UN-related information
Directory of home pages for UN Missions - Select your country from the drop-down menu to go to their UN Mission's home page. In some instances, you may find speeches and press releases by your country on your topic (or related topics).
Internet Access by Geographic Area (Yale) - links to UN sites and pages by region/country.

Maps and cartograms

Mapping Worlds - M
aps in which the size of a country is rendered by an indicator rather than by its geography (a.k.a. cartograms), offering a different perspective on the contemporary world. This group from the Netherlands, established in 2004 by Desmond Spruijt, partnered with World Bank to map Millennium Development Goals. Each project is developed and executed by experts in the fields of cartography, visual and interaction design and programming. Select a topic from the left menu to view available maps.
Millennium Development Goals (World Bank) - thematic world maps reflecting the status of countries in relation to millennium development goals relative to poverty, education, equality, etc.
UN Cartographic Section - Dept of Field Support - More than 100 general country profile maps in PDF and maps of UN deployment maps and political operations maps, also in PDF.

Gale Declassified Documents - over 500,000 pages of previously classified U.S. government documents covering major international events from the Cold War to the Vietnam War and beyond
Gale PowerSearch - cross-searches 10 Gale databases which contain reference book articles, magazines, newspapers, journals, and more.
Gale World History Resource Center - supports study of world history with
more than 1,800 primary sources, 27 reference sets, and 110 journals.
JSTOR (archival focus) - full-text articles from scholarly journals (including 56 in economics and 45 in political science, as well as journals about Middle East, Asian, and African studies). Lexis Nexis Scholastic - good source of articles from newspapers and magazines from the U.S. and other nations
Primary Resources in International Affairs (PRIA)-
growing collection of primary source material relevant to international affairs. It features treaties, conventions, writings, speeches, declarations, letters and constitutions from all historical periods. Be aware of potential bias since this database is compiled by an organization focused on security issues.
Project MUSE (fully searchable from home, full-text access at school) - full-text articles from scholarly journals with up-to-date access, including those in the fields economics, political science, and international relations, as well as journals focused on world regions.
